Recently I was speaking to a peer who shared that their one of their biggest motivators for working in the area that they do is anger…in further discussion the anger was directed towards things that as an individual health care worker we have very little control over. In the days that have followed this conversation I have had the opportunity to attend further training which included some education about a diagram that was focused on locus of control. The diagram was a grid. Whe. We focus on things that are of great importance to us but that we have very little or no control over we are in a position of powerlessness. This is a tough place to be, ultimately it leads to feeling defeated and disempowered. I think that ultimately this would lead to hopelessness. Where we want to be is with things that we feel are important, but where we also have control, where we have the power to make changes. In this we are empowered. When we are in this space we feel hope. I feel hope. That is how I am able to do the work I do after 8 years. I am hoping that this is what will allow me to be the best nurse I can be 30 years from now.
Peace!
