The only way I can make it through this is believing that the reason why people choose to go be nurses is because they want to do good and be good at their job. I fully recognize that good intentions do not always translate into the best results, but I think that good intentions coupled with the motivation to learn more and be more effective in delivering care does translate into better results if there is good leadership in the organization and available people who are skilled and effective in their jobs to act as mentors. I think that if all of these ingredients are available then there can still be improvement made in people’s health even in the current reality that we are living in with limited funding and resources. It is critical to continually take stock of who is working in an organization and what their different skills are, as well as being thoughtful about how to best utilize these skills.

I have read some academic literature about how health care professionals in the are of mental health particularly, not only want, but need direction about what their role on the health care team is.

I think that sometimes nurses get disillusioned, feel worn out and burnt out. I think when we get to that point it is important to recognize that there are other nursing jobs, jobs that are direct care and those that are not. I think that at one point nursing history there may have been limitations, but today I think that the possibilities are many.
