I think that something that could be better instilled in nurses in their undergraduate nursing programs is the importance (and arguably necessity) of mentorship in the transition from being a student to being a graduate nurse and ultimately a Registered Nurse. Sometimes I feel like when I work with new graduates or nurses with less than 2 years of experience (or nurses who are new to the area(s) that I have worked in) there does not seem to be much value placed on my experience, being almost 8 years into my career, working in different areas and in different cities. I wonder sometimes if this is because some new(er) nurses think that if they ask questions those with more experience may judge them negatively. For all the newer nurses out there that may be reading this, I personally would much rather be asked any question because I know that the first 2 years of independent practice is a very steep learning curve that the you are not going to remember everything that you learned in your undergraduate program. I feel like I still ask questions all the time, and that should be encouraged rather than feared.
