Opium of the Masses

Sometimes I get wrapped up in things that I feel weird about. For example, I have a lot of worry happening right now about a mortgage that we have to finalize for a condo we a purchasing this week. There is the headache of the process of going to the bank and getting a certified cheque for the notary and going to the notary to sign everything and then going back to the bank to sign more things and then picking up the key and then actually starting to pay the mortgage and so on and so forth. This is a for a place that we are going to be living in because life did not work out as planned. This is a headache for me. This is all manageable, but it is a huge headache. There are things that I perceive as more I important morally that I want to have time to do instead of being stressed out about the mortgage, for example, eating dinner with my children, doing the reading for my class, writing etc. But I am stuck because I have to work this mortgage thing out first. I feel like this is a theme for too many people. Aristotle may have been right. Having financial security probably does free up time for people to actually be great thinkers and to solve the problems of the world because you won’t get wrapped up in the headache of trying to figure out the mortgage stuff. I think, unfortunately there are probably a lot of people who get wrapped up in financial stuff, engaging with it to buy stuff and own stuff and more stuff and more stuff, which distracts from the ability to do this great thinking that can solve the problems of the world. Therein lies the rub…I am not the first to think of this but I am pondering it seriously right now; we need the security of knowing our basic needs are met for ourselves and our families but freedom from the intense pressure to have more stuff, so we can have more time to focus on this serious (serious) thinking to problem solve the ills of the world…but how many of these problems exist because some of us needed all this stuff and wanted to attain more and achieve more…when is it enough? How much better do I need to be? It takes a lot of time to think about what is actually important in terms of moral goodness and making the world a better place. And it makes me a little sick to think that there are people that do not really care about whether the world is a good place to live in or not in terms of social justice be use they just want a place where they can have a lot of power and money and things and flood their brains with serotonin and dopamine that way.
Peace,
Michelle D.
