I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity to work in different cities, different provinces, for different health care regions, and in a variety of positions from staff nurse, to clinical educator to mental health clinician (this was short lived) because I understand how it has given me perspective on the place(s) that I currently work. I am a reflexive person anyway (I am certain this is why I ended up majoring in sociology in my first baccalaureate degree experience). I think that as I have more life experiences, as I read more about my profession, as I work more with different nurses and health care and social services workers I have also become more reflexive and reflective in my practice. This evening, as my elder two sons are watching a cartoon on Netflix, I cannot stop thinking about how valuable it would be if all staff (especially nurses, because we provide the 24/7 care in many settings) who work in mental health learned about the entire continuum of care at the outset of their career. I think this is something that is helpful when someone is hired into a new position but definitely necessary when someone is newly orienting to their care area as new graduate or as someone who is new to a province/city/health care region/organization. I think that many of the animosity between staff who work in different areas is because of misunderstanding about what the other does in their position and the role that they place in the continuum of care.
Peace,
MIchelle
