I think this is more often not a passive process. In those moments when we have that feeling in the pit of our stomach that something is not right, sometimes (often?) we have to actively seek out the better that we need to know in order to do better. This is more than agreeing with a new idea and then practicing exactly the same despite the knew knowledge. Sometimes we this means we need to be brave.
