Is it weird that sometimes the expectations that we have for our patients are the same no matter what? Is it even weirder that they are sometimes determined by our personal values and beliefs instead of what we could see as ethically good? And by weird I mean confusing and kind of unsettling? Workplace culture/ward culture/unit culture influences this more than we probably think.
Something to think about: does the care that is given change based on how much we like someone? How nice we think they are? How much like us they are? How good they are? How bad they are? If they have a kind heart? If we think they don’t have a kind heart?
What makes a bad day or a good day at work? Is it how much fun we had? How much fun they had? How many people we helped? What is help? How do we know?
There are some serious questions that I think some nurses really need to ask themselves because if the best thing, the favourite thing, the most enjoyable thing about the job is not related to the actual purpose of the job then maybe it’s not the best fit. And, then what?
How do we quantify help? How do we quantify good? Is it something that we just feel with our hearts? With our minds? With our intellect? With our logic?

P.S. Quantico is a great TV show
