So much of our lives are dictated by capitalism. Our life worth is deeply influenced by ideas of work and productivity that has a monetary value. It seems deeply flawed that ideas of productivity driven by amassing monetary wealth are how we measure how well we are doing. It seems like such a deep mismatch that we do not value those things that we cannot put a price on. And this idea of purpose and meaning is also deeply entwined with having a job that pays us money. Is that how things have to be? We cannot put a monetary value on being kind. In a way we do…we quantify it as volunteering, free work that we do if we have the time. Doesn’t something seem wrong with this?
People are motivated by intrinsic and extrinsic things. But we really emphasize the importance of extrinsic reward.
