Writing this blog is an exercise in reflexivity.
One time I attended a workshop and the attitude of the presenter towards human beings left a lasting impression on me. The presenter approached every human they met with respect. It did not have to be earned. They did not have to prove they were worthy of it. They just got it because the presenter worked to build that perspective. I am committed to that being my approach to life and other humans. This is a necessary perspective to take to engage in nursing as an act. This idea of love for others is not new to me. I remember when I was in grade 10 telling my best friend at the time that I liked everyone. On reflection my interpretation of that is that one of my core values is that all humans have worth.
We only have one life to live. My experience of the world is unique to me. But, I certainly am not navigating life as a solitary human being. People matter to me. This Perspective is most certainly part of what drew me to nursing. For me, doing is part of my self-care.
The focus of our discussion in this month’s episode of The Shift Change is Self-Care. What is it? Why is it important? How do we do it?

P.s. I am always pleasantly surprised when I see that people click through and read the things I write. I hope that feeling never stops.
