Turning 40 is around the corner and so, I am deeply reflecting on where I am in life. Is this a mid-life crisis? Maybe.

These are decisions that I made in my life:

1) birth 4 kids in 5 years

2) Live in the Lower Mainland BC

3) Start a PhD right after finishing my second masters degree

4) Supporting my partner in a also pursuit a PhD

5) Continuing to have a career

6) Being the caregiver of my mom

These are things that I did not consciously choose:

1) My mom being diagnosed with cancer

2) My brother dying less than a year later

3) My partner’s parent being diagnosed with cancer 2 years after that

Life just happens. Sometimes it feels strangely unstable, but perhaps that is because it’s dynamic. The older one gets, the older everyone else gets, the older everything gets.

Life plays out in these ways that we cannot might not be able to plan for. That is just how it goes. Some things you can control, some you cannot.

Sometimes I wonder how these choices are judged by those looking in.

Sometimes we just do the best we can with what we have. Today I am thankful that life is okay.

Love,

Michelle D.
