
It’s 2021. It has been more than a century since the explosion of the centralized facilities. Hospitals were created, in many ways, to more economically pool resources for doctors. I think that it is time that we re-conceptualize the hospital.
Maybe there is room to build inclusive health centres that have facilities like fitness centres, meditations room, spiritual care spaces, community kitchen, libraries, childcare, all on one campus. Like little community hubs. I think it’s time to move past putting the great majority of resources into the highest level of care so that we can, as a society come to a different understanding of what constitutes health. Maybe it is even time to move past individualistic notions of health and wellness to build community strategies.
These are not novel ideas. Nor should they be.
