It’s a bit iffy sometimes, whether or not the herbal public knows what nurses do beyond taking blood pressures and giving meds. Nonetheless, they trust us. Deeply. We gotta work with that.
Last week a coworker asked me “so when are you going to go back to nursing?” I have a full-time job as a nurse. I work in Inforamtics. I support the development, training, optimization, integration of electronic health record in the Health Organizations in the Lower Mainland. Everyday at work I am confident and solid is my perception that I am a professional nurse. However, this does not clarify understanding of others (even those within healthcare) about what nurses do. Because people don’t know what we do.
We do more than give medications in a hospital and take your blood pressure before you see your GP (I would hazard a guess that most of the time the person taking your blood pressure at your GPs office is not a nurse at all).
For the last 100 years we have been doing what we do.
Love,
Michelle D.
